Local Businesses are the foundation of a strong, connected community. Wednesday’s Lake Macquarie Business Expo was more than just a Business-to-Business event. It demonstrated courage, leadership, collaboration and the strength of our local business community.
On Wednesday, 21 October, local business owners stepped away from the day-to-day demands of running their businesses to support the Lake Macquarie Business Expo at Club Macquarie.
Some committed their time and resources to exhibiting. Others stepped forward to share their knowledge and experience as speakers. Many attended to connect, learn and support fellow business owners.
Every one of those contributions mattered.
Running a small business takes courage. But putting yourself out there, standing behind your business, sharing what you know and supporting others takes another level of commitment.
What impressed me most was the willingness of business owners to contribute to something bigger than their own businesses. They recognised that when local businesses support one another, everyone has an opportunity to grow.
Local Businesses Benefit from Connection and Synergy
We often talk about networking, but genuine business connections are about much more than exchanging business cards.
They are about building relationships, sharing experiences, identifying opportunities and understanding how we can help each other succeed.
A conversation between two business owners might lead to a referral, a partnership, a new customer or simply some valuable advice that helps someone overcome a challenge.
That is the real power of synergy. When businesses bring their individual strengths together, they can achieve more than they could working alone.
Events like the Lake Macquarie Business Expo create opportunities for local businesses to meet potential partners, strengthen professional relationships and discover new ways to collaborate.
Leadership Means Creating Opportunities for Local Businesses
I also want to acknowledge the Lake Macquarie Business Board.
Our Board members are volunteers who give their time, experience and energy because they believe in the importance of a strong, connected local business community.
Organising an event like Wednesday’s Expo requires commitment, planning and a willingness to take risks.
No event ever guarantees everything you hope for. But leadership is not about waiting until success is guaranteed. It is about having the courage to create opportunities for others.
And that is exactly what our Board and participating businesses demonstrated.
Their efforts help create an environment where business owners can learn from one another, exchange ideas and build relationships that extend beyond a single event.
How Local Businesses Strengthen Our Community
One of the most important messages from Wednesday is that we do not have to compete for every opportunity.
There is enormous value in collaboration.
Small businesses are the backbone of our local economy. They create employment, support families, contribute to community organisations and help make Lake Macquarie a great place to live and work.
However, small business ownership can also be challenging and, at times, isolating.
Having a network of people who understand those challenges, are willing to share their experiences and genuinely want to see others succeed is incredibly valuable.
Supporting local businesses means more than choosing a local provider. It also means sharing knowledge, recommending trusted businesses, creating partnerships and encouraging others to succeed.
Business owners can help build a stronger regional economy by participating in networking events, engaging with fellow entrepreneurs and looking for opportunities to work together. For additional guidance, business owners can explore small business resources and support provided by the Australian Government.
A strong business community is not built by one organisation, one event or one individual. It is built by business owners who are prepared to show up for each other.
Thank You for Supporting Local Businesses
To every business that exhibited, every speaker who shared their knowledge, everyone who attended, and every Board member and support organisation who helped make Wednesday possible—thank you.
Your involvement demonstrated confidence in your business, commitment to our region and a willingness to help build something that benefits others.
As President of Lake Macquarie Business, I am proud of what we are working towards.
We are not simply organising networking events. We are building a business community where connections become opportunities, knowledge is shared, and businesses actively support one another.
Wednesday was another important step in that journey.
Because when local businesses step up together, Lake Macquarie becomes stronger.
